Many garages have not got the technology to check some vehicles so they will take a guess at the problem.
At Worcester’s Mobile Mechanic we have a policy of telling it as it is.
If we cannot communicate with the vehicle ECU, we call the customer and tell them. We then suggest a trusted specialist we know, who will have a dealer tool, and explain the costs involved.
On this occasion, the vehicle was an import which we knew we could “code read”.
Once investigated, the fault was confirmed and soon fixed. Half the problem is finding and confirming the fault in the first place!
