Get the most from your tank
With the cost of fuel in the UK at a record high, we’re all keen to save money wherever we can.
Following these fuel saving tips will enable you to get the maximum mileage out of your tank and become a more economical driver – helping both your bank account and the planet.
1. Lighten the load
The lighter the car, the less fuel you’ll use. Remove unnecessary, heavy items from your boot like that beach ball you haven’t used in 10 months or the booster seat your 15-year-old no longer needs.
2. Be aerodynamic
Roof bars and roof boxes create wind resistance and use more fuel due to the ‘drag effect’. Removing a roof-top cargo box can save up to 20% on fuel per year.
3. Basic maintenance
In order to maintain engine efficiency, it’s important to get your car serviced regularly. This simple step could really help you save fuel and keep your car in good condition.
4. Plan your journey
Look for the quickest route to get to your destination and try to avoid taking particularly busy roads as constantly breaking will not help your fuel tank. Use a sat nav or a map to avoid getting lost and using up unnecessary fuel.
5. Switch off the air con
Try not to use the air con unless you need it because air conditioning uses engine power and therefore increases fuel consumption. Dress for the weather and open the windows if you’re driving at a low speed.
6. Be a sensible driver
Read the road and avoid any last-minute braking. Accelerate and brake gently and change to a higher gear as soon as possible.
7. Stick to the speed limit
What Car? research found that driving at 80mph uses up to 25% more fuel than driving at 70mph. If you’re on smaller roads, slowing down from 70mph to 60mph could save another 10%.
8. Use gravity to your advantage
Easing off the throttle and keeping momentum will save more fuel than speeding up, braking and then starting all over again.
9. Take care of your tyres
Well maintained tyres are essential for safe and economical driving. It’s important to check your tyre pressure regularly, especially before a long journey.
10. Combine journeys
Try to run your errands on the same day, one long journey will save more fuel than five short ones because a warm engine is more efficient.

Really helpful, reliable and fair prices. They are always looking for sensible ways to help without running up huge bills. When we found we had a flat tyre on a Saturday morning just before a big journey, they sent someone out to fix it, even though that took them way past closing time.

Absolute life savers! Realised my MOT expired the evening before we were due to leave for holiday. Called up after trying almost 10 previous garages and they couldn’t have been more helpful. They fitted me in within an hour and we were able to leave for our holiday on time. The man I spoke to on the phone and the lady in reception were by far the most friendly and polite garage owners I have ever met and they even offered to make me a coffee while I waited. Highly recommend.

These guys are amazing. My Ford Focus wouldn't start and had to be recovered to my house because no garages would take it. I called David and WMM came out the same day, collected it and diagnosed it. They realised it was a known fault that Ford were aware of and it was cheaper for me to get Ford to fix it under their goodwill scheme. Absolutely amazing service. They did themselves out of the repair work because they care more about what's best for their customers.

Having developed a problem with my car en route from Devon to Worcester I was very fortunate to pick this garage to call. I handed my car to them at around 4pm on Thursday, by 4.30pm they'd had a look at it and by 11am on Friday I received a text to say it had been repaired (new shock absorbers and mounts fitted). David kept me updated re: parts/cost and I was able to head back down the M5 knowing it was safe. I can't thank or recommend David and the team enough.

Really helpful staff who explained everything. I recieved photo updates of what they were doing and they explained the cost breakdown so I knew what was what. They also give you a ring if anything is going to cost more than expected to fix. Highly recommend, will use again.
